Lightspeed and Chromebook WiFi Issues

Personally I got myself confused with “Why does Chrome Management Settings offer loads of different locations to add in WiFi settings? ‘For User’ and ‘For Device’!!##???”

Simply put….

‘For Device’ An open WiFi Configuration so that once your Chromebook has enrolled it’ll always be able to contact the internet to allow logging in on the Chromebook. i.e. Proxy = Direct Connection.

‘For User’ Once the user has logged on you can configure Proxy = <proxyserver>

This way your Chomebook can get connected whenever it needs to and your students will always be filtered via your Proxy server.

A problem that I can across was….. When users are prompted to Authenticate with Lightspeed, that authentication would stick with that device until Lightspeed Rocket automatically timesout and forces the user to log back on again. This wasn’t really acceptable with our environment. So a simple way to force users to authenticate with Lightspeed was to….

Add a Page to Load on Startup. The page to load was: lsaccess.me/logout
Put this into Chrome Management Settings –> User Settings –> Settings –> Startup –>Pages To Load on Startup

Lightspeed and Chromebook

I’ve been setting up some chromebooks to connect to our schools network and I’ve been having some problems with getting things to work. I’ve followed
Lightspeed’s Wiki on how to get things working but they have missed out a couple of key details.

Proxy settings Select Manual Proxy Configuration and enter the Rocket Appliance’s IP address. Don’t forget to put the port of: 8080

The most important bit that they’ve missed out was the section regarding the SSL Certificates. They mention in BIG RED writing that (In Step 3: Install the Lightspeed Systems Certificate)
“Note:
Currently, this procedure cannot be done from the Chrome Admin console and therefore must be performed on each device. Google is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.”

Well this is rubbish. I’ve managed to get this working myself.
What you’d want to do is to follow up to step 9 and once that is complete then run an export on the Lightspeed Certificate that you’ve just imported onto a USB stick and go to:

Chrome Management –> Networks –> Select to Organizations level –> For Users –> Manage Certificates

Import from your USB stick and Yipee!! Its done!

Do the usual or restart another Chromebook a few times and try again.
This as worked wonders for me.
So good luck! 🙂
